Foundation for Youth Prevention Initiatives works collaboratively with community members, coalitions, and partners to promote positive mental health and address substance abuse and misuse in Bartholomew County. Funded through the State of Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addictions and the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Foundation for Youth Prevention Initiatives works to raise awareness and provide support to address the pressing needs and risks faced throughout the community. This work is at the forefront of our vision for “A vibrant, healthy community where all individuals are empowered to lead mentally, physically, and socially rewarding lives.”
Data & Prevention Insight: Summer Substance Use Risks
The summer months — especially June and July — are closely associated with a significant rise in young people trying substances for the first time. Research consistently shows noticeable increases in the first-time use of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana during this season compared to the rest of the year.
Several factors contribute to this increased risk:
-
Lack of structure and supervision while school is out
-
Increased peer influence and social gatherings
-
Environmental factors like longer daylight hours and heat
-
Potential worsening of mental health challenges
Why Summer Prevention Matters
Targeted summer prevention initiatives have been shown to make a meaningful difference:
-
Summer Youth Employment Programs (SYEPs) help reduce violence and crime rates among participants.
-
Structured summer programs and camps encourage healthy, positive behaviors.
-
Connecting youth with health services, mental health support, and mentorship provides crucial support during these risk-prone months.
Did you know?
69% of families have clear rules about alcohol and drug use.
We encourage all parents and caregivers to be part of that 69%! Start open, honest conversations with the youth in your life about your expectations regarding substance use. Regular check-ins let them know they can come to you with questions, concerns, or peer pressure situations.
Talk. They Hear You.
